Xmas with the Waltons

Tue, Dec 27

Waltons and HahnsWe typically do Thanksgiving with my family (because Tess' family is mostly off shooting things then) and Christmas with Tess' family, and that was the case this year.  Her brother and family and he dad were all in town for several days (her mom already lives in Dallas) and everyone was able to spend quality time together.

Claire and their daughter Sierra are only 3 months apart in age and act like best friends when together (they have known each other all their lives, so not surprising).  Their son Joey is a cute little guy, and idolizes our twins.  Tess made a fantastic meal.  Much Kinect was played.  I escaped and went for a run.  Good times all around.

Spring 2012 Goal Race- Ironman 70.3 Texas

Mon, Dec 05

Ironman 70.3 TexasMy 2011 triathlon season was ... um ... not so great.  Between starting a new demanding job and having back issues while swimming, I failed to complete nearly as many triathlons as usual. Like none.  I did some running races and a couple bike rallies, but no tris.  Sad- first time 10 years I didn't do a triathlon that year.

My running and biking are actually in decent shape.  I've been biking regularly, both on and off-road, and recently ran a fairly decent 5K. But I need to start increasing my distances and frequency of training, and get back in the pool.  And now that it's 30 degrees out and raining half the time.  Yay.

But the back is feeling better and I recently joined the Tom Landry Fitness center.  With access to a pool, spin classes and an indoor track I have no excuse for lack of winter training facilities.  Now, I just...

Thanksgiving at the Hahns

Fri, Nov 25

Hahn Family 2011In general, I don't care for most holidays.  Thanksgiving and birthdays are about all I celebrate.  Typically we do Thanksgiving with my family, and xmas with Tess' family (since generally for Thanksgiving her family is either shooting animals of some sort., or partying in Vegas).

This year we gathered at my parents' residence of 45 years in Ft. Worth, TX. My local sister and brother and my remote (Arkansas) sister and all their families were all present.  20 of us all together.  Was very nice- we don't all get together too often any more.

We did the FW Turkey Trot, then headed over to their house early for a shower and snacks.  Even at 72 my mother put together a tremendous feast entirely by herself.  After we recovered from dinner and the following pie-o-ganza, we managed to get some No Rules Football going...

FW Turkey Trot 2011

Thu, Nov 24

FW Turkey TrotThe entire family scraped out of bed early Thanksgiving morning to head to Fort Worth.  First, to run the 30th Annual FW Turkey Trot, then over to my parents for the Thanksgiving feast.

It was a perfect morning for running- clear, sunny and 50 degrees.  Claire and I first ran the 1K event. which made a great warm up.  Then the twins and I ran the 5K.

Xan and I lost Kai somehow early on, but Kai ran a good race- several minutes faster than his last one.  Xan and I ran together, with his lozerly self pulling ahead in the finishing gate. I consider it a victory though, as he usually beats me by several minutes.  At 26:45 my time is 5 minutes off my best and as adult, but still 3 minutes faster than that disastorious Dad's day 5K back in June.  So - victory!

DrupalCamp Atlanta

Sun, Sep 25

I'm heading to Georgia this weekend to attend and speak at DrupalCamp Atlanta.  My proposed session on Learning Drupal was accepted and is scheduled for right after the keynote.  Guess I better start writing it, eh?

I chose that topic because Drupal is known to have a steep "learning cliff" - it typically takes many months or years to get Drupal. I plan to go through all the resources available to learn Drupal for each stage of development, for sitebuilders, developers, themers and site users.

Plan to get a ride in at the nearby mountain bike trail used for the 1996 Olympics while I'm there.  And maybe see Wicked!

Riding at River Legacy

Sat, Sep 24

River Legacy TrailWe did some park exploring this morning- all the way to River Legacy park in Arlington.  I packed my main mountain bike, as well as my older hardtail bike for a buddy to ride.  He and I hit the DORBA bike trail, while Tess and the kids explored the park and the Living Science Center.

The trail starts out easy but soon gets intersesting. After some twisting, rolling hills I found a "red" section called EKG. If you really, really like rollers, this is the trail for you.  I should have scoped it out better first before charging over the hills at full speed, just to find a root over the top of one of them- did a spectacular endo (captured on handlebar cam to boot) but managed to...
